What is Ramayana?

Ramayana is one of India’s greatest epic stories, written by the sage Valmiki over 2,000 years ago! It tells the story of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshmana, and their loyal friend Hanuman.

The Ramayana is divided into seven Kands (chapters):

  1. Bala Kanda – The Childhood Chapter
  2. Ayodhya Kanda – The Kingdom Chapter
  3. Aranya Kanda – The Forest Chapter
  4. Kishkindha Kanda – The Monkey Kingdom Chapter
  5. Sundara Kanda – The Beautiful Chapter
  6. Yuddha Kanda – The War Chapter
  7. Uttara Kanda – The Final Chapter

The Ramayana teaches us about keeping promises, respecting parents, being loyal, fighting for what’s right, and never giving up!

Now let me take you through all seven Kands, one by one!

Kand 1: Bala Kanda – Rama’s Birth and Childhood

The Story in 100 Words:

Long ago in Ayodhya, King Dasharatha had no children. He performed a special prayer, and the gods blessed him with four sons! Rama was the eldest, born to Queen Kaushalya. He had three brothers: Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna.

Rama grew up to be the most handsome, kind, and skilled prince. The sage Vishwamitra took young Rama and Lakshmana to protect his prayers from demons. There, Rama defeated the demoness Tataka!

Vishwamitra then took them to King Janaka’s kingdom for a swayamvara (bride selection ceremony). King Janaka had a mighty bow of Lord Shiva that nobody could even lift! Young Rama not only lifted it but broke it! He won Princess Sita’s hand in marriage. They returned to Ayodhya, and everyone celebrated the royal wedding!

What This Kanda Teaches:

  • Education and discipline make you strong
  • Respect your teachers and learn from them
  • Goodness and skills come from practice
  • Great heroes are made through hard work

Kand 2: Ayodhya Kanda – The Sad Exile

The Story in 100 Words:

King Dasharatha decided to crown Rama as the next king. Everyone in Ayodhya was celebrating! But Queen Kaikeyi, poisoned by her jealous servant Manthara’s words, demanded two old promises from the king: make her son Bharata king instead, and send Rama to the forest for fourteen years!

The heartbroken king had to keep his word. Noble Rama accepted exile without any complaint. “A son must obey his father,” he said calmly.

Devoted Sita refused to stay in luxury. “Where my husband goes, I follow!” Loyal Lakshmana also joined them. “I cannot leave my brother alone!”

The three left for the forest. King Dasharatha died of grief. When Bharata learned what happened, he was furious! He refused the throne and begged Rama to return. But Rama said, “I must complete the fourteen years to keep Father’s promise.” Bharata placed Rama’s sandals on the throne and ruled only as Rama’s representative.

What This Kanda Teaches:

  • Duty comes before personal happiness
  • True love means standing by someone in trouble (Sita)
  • Loyalty to family is precious (Lakshmana)
  • Righteousness means refusing to take what’s not yours (Bharata)

Kand 3: Aranya Kanda – Forest Life and Sita’s Kidnapping

The Story in 100 Words:

Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived peacefully in Dandaka forest, building a simple hut and helping sages. But Ravana’s sister Surpanakha saw handsome Rama and wanted to marry him. When rejected, she attacked Sita! Lakshmana protected Sita and punished Surpanakha.

The angry demoness told her brother Ravana, the powerful demon king of Lanka, about beautiful Sita. Evil Ravana wanted Sita for himself!

Ravana sent the demon Maricha, who transformed into a magical golden deer. When Sita saw it, she asked Rama to catch it. Rama went after the deer. Maricha cried in Rama’s voice for help! Worried Sita forced Lakshmana to go check.

Alone, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana! The brave bird Jatayu tried to stop him but was killed. When Rama and Lakshmana returned, Sita was gone! They were devastated and began their search!

  • Bravery means fighting for others (Jatayu)
  • United we’re strong, divided we’re vulnerable

Kand 4: Kishkindha Kanda – The Monkey Kingdom

The Story in 100 Words:

While searching for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana met Hanuman, the mighty monkey warrior and devotee of Rama! Hanuman immediately recognized Rama’s divinity and became his greatest devotee.

Hanuman took them to Sugriva, the monkey king who had been thrown out of his kingdom by his brother Vali. Rama helped Sugriva defeat Vali in battle and regain his throne.

Grateful Sugriva promised to help find Sita. He sent monkey armies in all four directions to search! Hanuman led the southern team because Ravana’s Lanka was across the southern ocean.

The monkeys reached the ocean shore but didn’t know how to cross the vast water! Then wise Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his forgotten divine powers. “You are the son of Vayu, the wind god! You can fly!” Hanuman remembered his strength, grew gigantic, and prepared to leap across the ocean!

What This Kanda Teaches:

  • True friendship means helping each other
  • Always keep your promises and repay kindness
  • Sometimes we forget our own strength and abilities
  • Everyone needs someone to believe in them
  • United teamwork achieves impossible tasks

Kand 5: Sundara Kanda – Hanuman’s Heroic Journey

The Story in 100 Words:

Mighty Hanuman leaped across the entire ocean in one giant jump, chanting “Jai Shri Ram!” He reached Lanka and began searching for Sita.

He found her imprisoned in Ashoka Vatika garden, surrounded by demon guards. Sita was sad but brave, refusing all of Ravana’s demands and threats! Hanuman approached her carefully and gave her Rama’s ring as proof. “Rama is coming to rescue you! Stay strong!” he assured her.

Hanuman wanted to test Lanka’s strength, so he destroyed the royal garden! Angry Ravana’s soldiers captured him and set his tail on fire as punishment!

But clever Hanuman used his burning tail as a weapon! He escaped and jumped from building to building, setting the entire golden city of Lanka on fire! Then he flew back to Rama with the good news that Sita was alive and waiting!

What This Kanda Teaches:

  • Devotion gives you superhuman strength (Hanuman’s love for Rama)
  • Never underestimate yourself
  • Courage means facing danger for others
  • Problems can be turned into opportunities (burning tail became a weapon)
  • Faith and determination overcome all obstacles

Kand 6: Yuddha Kanda – The Great War

The Story in 100 Words:

Rama’s army reached the ocean, but how to cross? Rama prayed to the Ocean God, who appeared and said, “Build a bridge, and I will support it!” The monkey army built a magnificent stone bridge to Lanka—Nala and Neela engineered it, and even small squirrels helped by carrying tiny pebbles!

The army crossed, and a fierce war began! Ravana had powerful warriors—his son Indrajit, brother Kumbhakarna, and many demons. The battles were terrible!

Ravana’s righteous brother Vibhishana joined Rama, knowing Ravana was wrong. After many days of war, Rama killed the ten-headed Ravana with a divine arrow!

Sita was rescued! She proved her purity by entering fire (Agni Pariksha), and the fire god himself declared her pure. The fourteen-year exile ended! They returned to Ayodhya in a flying chariot. The entire kingdom celebrated with lamps (the first Diwali)! Rama was crowned king, beginning Rama Rajya—a golden age of peace and justice!

  • Justice and truth eventually triumph

Kand 7: Uttara Kanda – Life After Victory

The Story in 100 Words:

After becoming king, Rama ruled Ayodhya wisely and fairly. Everyone was happy in his kingdom—Rama Rajya meant perfect justice!

However, this Kanda also tells difficult stories. Some people in the kingdom questioned Sita’s purity after her time in Lanka. Even though she had proved herself, Rama, as king, had to uphold his duty to his people. He sent pregnant Sita to the forest, where she lived in sage Valmiki’s ashram.

There, Sita gave birth to twin sons—Luv and Kush. Valmiki taught them the Ramayana itself! Years later, the boys sang the Ramayana in Ayodhya without knowing Rama was their father.

When Rama learned the truth, he asked Sita to return. But Sita, hurt by being sent away despite her innocence, called upon Mother Earth. The earth opened, and Sita returned to where she came from. Heartbroken Rama ruled for many more years before finally going to heaven.

What This Kanda Teaches:

  • Even good people face difficult choices
  • A king’s duty to his people sometimes conflicts with personal happiness
  • Life has both joy and sorrow
